Love, laughter and birthday cake

Okay, I’ll admit it. I’m still a little bit in denial about this whole first birthday thing. Baby girl isn’t actually turning one until June 3, so I guess I’m entitled to avoid really accepting it until then. But we did have her birthday party today.

During the past week, I ordered three cakes. Yep, three birthday cakes for my daughter’s first birthday. As one friend pointed out, the cakes outnumbered Baby Girl’s age. But hey, two of those were free!

Did you know that Lund’s & Byerly’s as well as Kowalski’s offer free cakes for baby’s first birthday? The Kowalski’s cake is about 4” in diameter, and the Lund’s cake was 7”. I realize that we didn’t really need two free cakes in addition to the ice cream cake I purchased, but who turns down free cake? Besides, they were yummy.

Since we’re on the topic of cakes, I’ll spend a second on the ice cream cake. When baby girl was baptized last June, we ordered a Dairy Queen cake. We asked them to put a cross on it and her name. The cake decorator started the writing too close to the center and ran out of room. Instead of fixing the error, this person just decided to let the wording run over the edge of the cake. Now, in all fairness, her entire name (first, middle and last) is 21 characters plus spaces. But still!

Now that you’ve got some perspective, you’ll appreciate the next part of the story. We decided to order a cake from the same Dairy Queen for today’s party. Figuring that the cake decorator can’t handle anything complicated, we asked for something simple. Use purple and pink icing and write “Happy Birthday” on the cake.

So what did we end up with? Goofy pink/peach and black gel icing bubble letters on top of a purple background. Isn’t it awful?

Especially when you compare it with these two beautiful free cakes:

But it’s definitely not the cake decorations that mattered. Our family and close friends all came over to celebrate our baby girl. Our house was filled with love and laughter all day. At the end of the day, I couldn’t have asked for a better birthday party for my little girl.

Yummy!!! Cake looks very sweet. Making cake is too easy but decorating it is too tough.
